WYTHE COUNTY, Va. - Youth athletes from Wythe County and the Town of Wytheville will have the opportunity to play under the bright lights at local high school stadiums during the upcoming "Youth Hometown Lights" games this fall.
Taking advantage of the high school football schedules, these future Friday night stars will step into the spotlight. The Wythe County Parks and Recreation Department and the Town of Wytheville Parks and Recreation Department will host a series of special youth games on three Friday evenings this season.

The first of these special matchups is set for Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, at George Wythe High School’s Pendleton Field. The Town of Wytheville’s Junior Varsity and Varsity Maroon and Silver teams will face off while the George Wythe Maroon high school team is away at Altavista.
One week later, on Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, Fort Chiswell High School will host the next game in the series. The Fort Chiswell Gold will take on the Fort Chiswell Black while the Fort Chiswell Pioneers play on the road at Eastside.
The series will conclude on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, at Rural Retreat High School’s Dean Rhea Field, where the Rural Retreat Orange and Black teams will compete on their future home turf. The Rural Retreat Indians have a bye that week.
"Our departments saw a unique opportunity in the high school football schedules to really showcase our youth athletes," said Kevin Williams, Director of Parks and Recreation for Wythe County. “We appreciate the cooperation of the Wythe County high school athletic directors and administration to make these games possible.”
" By offering the opportunity to play under the lights our hope was to place a spotlight on the upcoming athletes that play and cheer as a part of our recreation program," added Kelley Davis, Athletic Coordinator for the Town of Wytheville Parks and Recreation department. “Our hope and want for these young athletes are to strive to continue to play and cheer on this main stage as they get older.”
The community is encouraged to come out and support the teams throughout the season, especially during the “Youth Hometown Lights” games when the high school teams are away. Admission is free. Games will begin at 5:30 p.m. each evening, with the second game slated to start around 7 p.m. Concessions will be available, with proceeds benefiting local league programs.
