HOW TO REGISTER
Who may register to vote in Virginia?
Any United States citizen whose home is in Virginia and who will be at least 18 years old by the next general election, is not a convicted felon or who is not adjudicated mentally incompetent, may register to vote.
When may I register?
Year-round, except during the 21 days before a general or primary election or 14 days before a special election.

How much does it cost?
Voter registration is free.
Do I need special information to register?
You must furnish your full legal name, home address, date of birth, social security number, and any previous place of registration. You must give this information under oath.
Do I have to register by party affiliation?
No. The commonwealth of Virginia does not have registration by party.
Each year general elections are held on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November. If a primary election is called, it is held on the second Tuesday in June.

How do I vote absentee?

No-excuse voting - Voters may vote by mail or in person 45 days before an election.
VOTING
Where will I vote?
The registrar will send you a voter registration card with the name of the precinct and the location of the polling place. You must always vote in your precinct. You may be required to show identification at the polls. For where to vote click here.
When are the polls open?
The polls open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. If you are in line when the polls close, you may still vote.
What is a party Primary?
The Democratic and Republican party may nominate their candidates by either a primary election or by convention or mass meeting. If the party asks for a primary election for the November election, it will be held on the second Tuesday in June. A primary called for the May general election will be held in the first Tuesday in March.
Can anyone vote in a Primary election?
If you are a registered voter, you may vote in any Primary election. However, if a primary is held for both parties in the same election district, you must choose in which primary you wish to vote and you may only vote in one primary.
